Many moons ago, my firstborn was lying asleep on the bed in our guest room, looking very peaceful in the calm afternoon light. My wife snapped a photo of our sleeping beauty, and showed me the image later.
It has stuck with me enough that, years later, I felt inspired to paint that same pose into a little sketch I called "Moon Baby."
When I shared "Moon Baby" on Instagram, I received an enthusiastic response. (You know every comment means a lot to us artists, right?) That further inspired me to take this concept to the next level, with a full-sized painting in greater detail.
It's been a little foray from my usual line of oil painting work, which usually keeps to the path of still life and portraiture -- and a very enjoyable foray, too. My children are an endless inspiration to me: their sweetness, their liveliness, and their innocence (not to mention the impossible curves of their big heads!). And who can resist the peace inherent in the sight of a sleeping child?
