Whether you desire an image of a family member to hang in your home or a visual record of a respected leader to grace the walls of your school or business, John Folley can work with you to provide a beautiful portrait that will capture personal character and remain a treasure for generations.
John can work in one of two ways to produce your portrait:
- For the finest possible portrait experience, live sessions are desirable. Depending on the size of the painting and the chosen pose, John would need at least three sittings of three hours each and would work on your portrait between sittings. He will work with the client to achieve a flattering pose and to ensure the client's comfort throughout the process.
- Where live sessions are not possible, John is happy to work from a photograph. He will provide a photoshoot on site or the subject can travel to his studio. After submitting a selection of 5-10 photos as options, John will then use the selected photo as the reference for his final portrait.

"Working with John was a fabulous process from start to finish! The painting is such a treasure: people can't believe how beautifully and accurately he captured each of the children. Thank you for making our vision come to life!"

"My husband and I cannot begin to tell you how much your extraordinary painting of our 4 grandchildren means to us! You completely captured I's exuberant joy, A's wonder, E's playful impishness, and S's sunlit wisdom.
The expressions of each child are spot-on, and the colors are glorious. You have an astonishing gift, and we feel hugely blessed to have shared in the fruits of it. Thank you so much, John, for the care and time you took to bring such a beautiful work to fruition. I am having the painting framed now and can't wait to hang it!

"It takes talent to paint a portrait like this, but it takes more than talent to capture the subject’s essence and personality so true to form! It hangs on our living room wall and brings us great joy every time we look at it - it's the gift that keeps on giving. It's such a meaningful and unique gift and it was such a special surprise.
Thank you John Folley for this treasure!"

Investment & Process
The ideal portrait is painted entirely from life, with the model posed in-studio.* With his subject before him, John can work the most accurately, the most rapidly, and capture the most vivid and harmonious color and light effect. Instead of having to adjust his vision "second-hand" from a photo, he can work directly with what is before him. This process produces the best results and is our top recommendation.
The second-best option is for John to pose the model in-studio and shoot his own photograph, working from that for the completion of the painting. In this scenario, the model only has to be present for a short time, John can control the pose and lighting, and John can more easily apply his vision to the canvas, having studied the subject in real life.
The third option is for the patron to provide a photo from which John can extrapolate for the painting. This works well in the case that the model cannot be present in person, whether because of distance, time constraints, or if the model is too young to sit or the portrait is posthumous.
*Sessions in your home may also be an option. Please inquire to discuss.
