Commissioned Artwork
John Henry Folley is often available to produce a painting especially for you. There are various ways that he can work:
- Including your beloved object(s) in a still life of his composition, with your input.
- Painting a fine art piece based on a photo you provide.
- Drawing upon his imaginative powers to produce an art piece based upon your vision.
- Another option you have in mind -- just ask!
John is experienced in working with patrons who have a very specific idea in mind and those who have a general vision but aren't sure yet where they're going. He is available, communicative, a great listener... in short, an ideal collaborator.

"a family heirloom"
"Deirdre and John, the painting is now framed and hung in our living room. We love it! The blues couldn't sing together better! Thank you for your artistry and commitment to making our vision a reality and creating a family heirloom. It really is stunning and a tremendous work of art you created."

"The best gift we've ever given"
"I was absolutely blown away by my experience working with John and Deirdre. The whole process was so easy, it was so pleasant to communicate with them, and the sketches were so helpful... John's work is just stunning and I couldn't have imagined it going better, from start to finish.
My dad doesn't get emotional easily, but he was so moved when we presented the painting to him on Christmas morning. He could not believe it. It's the best gift we've ever given him.
We would definitely reach out again on another occasion. I think that this is such a meaningful purchase and overall it was an amazing experience!"

"I am so moved"
"When I gave my mother the painting, she was completely speechless. Then as the details of the composition sank in, she was eager to share with everyone about the meaning!
I am so moved. The whole process of commissioning the painting was so beautiful and such a joy. Every time I think about it I feel just giddy! The personal attention that I received throughout the experience was beyond compare. John and Deirdre just understood exactly what this tribute to my parents meant to me; they saw the vision and John was absolutely the man to make it happen!
I'm so, so happy to have been able to do this. I can't thank you enough for everything."

What does the process look like for commissioning a painting?
Even if the process of commissioning artwork is unfamiliar, there's no need to worry. It will be our pleasure to walk through the process with you. You might be wondering...
1. How do I get started?
Contact us to let us know if you're interested. You'll hear back from Deirdre Folley, John's wife and studio manager. She will be happy to chat with you about your concept. She will work with you and with John through the whole process to ensure that everything goes smoothly (because even the most organized artist can use a hand now and then to keep on task and stay in touch!).
2. How much does it cost?
The price varies a great deal depending on the medium, the size of the painting, the subject matter, and other possible factors. To have a general sense of the value of John's work, you can visit his still life portfolio and see his portrait page. There is a per-square-inch cost for almost all John's work, which means that size is a major factor, as is the complexity of what you're looking for. We can give you more detail once we've discussed your vision or concept.
For any custom work, please expect that your piece will have a starting price around $500 for drawings or studies in anticipation of a final work, with prices for oil paintings starting more in the range of $3000-$5000 for smaller-scale projects.
3. Do I need to know about art in order to commission a painting?
No -- anyone can commission a painting! You don't need any special vocabulary or inside knowledge in order to work with John. If you enjoy John's classical style, then you are sure to love whatever custom piece he produces for you. Before you even start planning with John, you'll have a chance to talk things over with Deirdre. John is great at answering your questions and will help you understand what he's working on by talking through it and providing you with one or more sketches at the beginning of the process.
4. What can I expect during the process?
Once we have discussed plans and we've received your deposit (30-50% of the final cost of the artwork, not including framing nor shipping), then Deirdre will put you in touch with John so that you can talk directly and get 100% on the same page about your vision. John will then provide you with a sketch and get your approval before he commences work in the final medium. He'll give you an update either halfway through or just before completing (depending on the project), and then the artwork will ship to you when the final payment has been received. In the case of local patrons, we can arrange a handoff so that John can deliver his work to you himself or you can schedule a visit to the studio to pick it up.
In the case of a major work, there may be a preliminary payment to receive a sketch. At that point, if you want to proceed, then we can arrange for the deposit on the artwork and go from there.
At any point in the process, we're always just a phone call or an email away!
We love to hear your story, see your vision, and make your artwork dream come to life. It is truly an exciting and collaborative process between patron and artist.
We hope to hear from you soon!
