Learn the method of the old Masters...

"I found out about John's workshop online and signed up for it in order to begin learning the Boston School approach to the foundational skill of drawing. The workshop was challenging yet within reach of my skill level. I found that John had a good balance between instruction and letting me figure out things on my own. He saw where I was and guided me towards improvement.

I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to follow a high level of art instruction with John. He is caring, thoughtful, and demanding.  I hope to get the chance to take another workshop with him and I would recommend his teaching to anyone who is looking to learn about representational drawing and painting."

"John is a wonderful artist. Most importantly, John is a good man. He is therefore the ideal instructor for young artists; he will educate their craft and inspire them to live good lives. I recommend John with no reservation whatsoever.  Even if he were not an artist, John would be a fantastic mentor to any young person. But no parent need to compromise artistic education here; John is a terrific teacher and awe-inspiring artist."
- Alvaro de Vicente, headmaster, The Heights School

My daughter and I both loved taking the summer workshop with John and have only good things to say about it! We learned a lot and were both very happy with the work we produced. I appreciated John’s way of addressing each person's work with respectful and honest constructive criticism, helping everyone to really improve. There was a nice balance between being challenged and also enjoying the process. We would both be interested in studying with John again."

Full-Time Atelier Study
If you are interested in pursuing figurative drawing and painting in the Boston School tradition under my direct tutelage full-time, please drop a line to inquire. The training would involve instruction from me and directed solo study with your own space in my Lancaster studio. This option is only for the very driven and self-motivated. Formal critiques would take place once a week. Under this training and with due diligence, your drawing - and, eventually, painting - skills will increase rapidly. As far as concentrated technique enhancement, this regimen is more valuable in moving you forward as an artist than a year's training at a normal art school or in a Fine Arts major at a regular college.
I can accommodate at most two students, so space is very limited. To begin in Fall 2019, you must register, with a deposit, by August 10. Please be in touch now if you would like to discuss this possibility.
