This painting is the latest in my 2022-2023 Citrus series. Here I combine a theme that is prevalent among my works - the spouted vessel - with the current motif of citrus fruit. Owing to a very busy 2022, this painting was delayed as the final piece in the series by many months, such that I did not get it going on the easel until well into January of the new year.
One reason for my busyness in 2022 was the number of Live Paintings I executed at weddings and other formal events. These events, during which I paint a complete painting from start to finish in just a few hours, caused me to see, grasp, and imitate nature faster than ever before. This painting, which was also my first formal still life of 2023, felt like the best painting I've ever done in studio. My understanding of line and color is always increasing.
The viewer can squint and see the gleam of copper from the kettles picked up in subtle accents on the tea ware. The warm glow of the fabric resonates as well, and you will find there a subtle indication of the pattern of travelers depicted in the weaving.
Coin enthusiasts like me will also appreciate my nod in the title to Janus, the Roman god we recognize from historic currency. The god of comings and goings, he is depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions, much like these two copper teapots.
